Synopsis

Cruising Lesbiana is an experimental docu-fiction film by Joyce Victoria Newrzella that delves deep into the complex world of cruising, desire and the discourse about space within Barcelona's queer community. The film accompanies selected personalities from Barcelona's FLINTA* community as they talk about their personal experiences and perspectives on cruising in a moving car. Concepts such as consent, public spaces, and safe spaces are addressed, and the question is raised as to what cruising areas for FLINTA individuals could look like and why they currently always take place indoors.

Visually, the film interweaves raw HDV footage and carefully selected images of the city of Barcelona with a fictional narrative thread. These visual elements serve not only as a backdrop, but also as an integral part of the narrative, capturing the urban landscape as a place of possibilities and, at the same time, limitations for queer encounters.

In parallel, the film develops a fictional narrative centered around a female taxi driver. Through the eyes of the driver, the film explores various forms of cruising areas in and around Barcelona. This fictional level makes it possible to shed light on the often non-existent or only hidden dimensions of cruising, from public forests and the beach to seemingly inconspicuous places that have special significance for the queer community.

The fusion of documentary interviews, a fictional plot, and raw HDV footage creates a unique “docu-fiction” narrative. This approach allows Cruising Lesbiana to provide authentic insights into the experiences of the FLINTA* community as well as a multi-layered and poetic exploration of desire, identity, and space in the context of cruising. The film questions norms and explores the fluid boundaries between public and private space, visibility and identity, as well as individual and collective desire.
